The US has finally banned the TikTok Social Media and Influencers who have been building their audience for the last five to six years lost their audience over night.
It's time to consider building email list where your audience stays with you if things like this happens again in the future.
In this post, I would like to share to you how to have your own mailing list and at the end of this post why it's dire to guard your audience. Let's start builing your audience the right way, the way that'll save your career
What's Mailing List
In short, a mailing list is a database of your audience that you have full control over. It could be in the form of email, phone number or social media handles. But the most important thing is that you, and only you, have control - not the social media companies.
From your online activities, you collect your audience names, email, phone and other detail such as social handles, address and other relevant to your project. But email and phone are the primary data that you always try to acquire.
If you haven't notice, email and phones are the identifications to sign up to all other websites including social media.
Things You Need
Here I'm going to share what you're going to need in order to have a working and unlimited data acquisition based on my experience and what I'm currently use. You only need three things to get started collecting your audience details.
Mautic to Organize Your Data
Mautic is open source email collection and management that is so easy to use and does not require long learning to be accustomed to.
And because it's open source, it's free to use for commercial and personal such as small influencers with 500 thousands to 1 million contacts.
There are many features that you get with Mautic that no other software offers. One major feature that I really like is customizable contact page for each of your audience. You can record, their names, emails, phones. You also can see whether or not they're engage with your content or not.
One thing that could potentially be a little challenging for you who are not tech savvy, installing mautic for the first time is mildly difficult. You have to hire someone to do that for you. Just pay one time and it'll run for you and no to very little maintenance required.
Cheap Server to Host Mautic
To get mautic running, you can purchase a cheap server as little as 1 dollar per month. But you can maintain unlimited number of audience. Whether you have 1 million contacts or more. a cheap server can host that for you.
Usually, if you purchase a server, you'll need to have a domain. Some server providers will give you a domain name free if you buy a more expensive server. But this shouldn't discourage you from having your own data of your audience.
Email Server
This's the third thing you need is an email server to send email whenever you want to reach your audience. This's not mandatory, you can just save and post importantly own your contacts and never send email, only when bad things happen such as a social media banned like TikTok. Once needed, then you'll set up your email server.

Why Mailing List Important for You
Content Creator like you needs audience and you should own your audience not the platform you're posting on. If you don't have you're own data of your audience, just a number of massive following, when banning happen like TikTok, you'll lose all of your audience and you will for sure need to build again from scratch.
However, if you own your data, you can inform your audience where you migrate after the ban. Isn't this awesome.
I heard stories where people who have up to 5 millions followers on TikTok lose their audience in a blink of an eye. And for what crime have they commit? It's a sad, sad story indeed.
